About UMFT

A reference point for medical education in Eastern Europe

Victor Babeș University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Timișoara was founded in 1944 by a Decree-Law of King Mihai I. Over eight decades, it has grown from a single faculty into a multidisciplinary centre of excellence and is today one of the most respected medical universities in Eastern Europe.

What sets UMF apart from comparable institutions in the region is the combination of solid clinical training, cutting-edge technologies and international accessibility. Students do not wait until the final years to come into contact with real patients. Clinical practice begins in affiliated university hospitals from the early years. With programmes taught in Romanian, English and French, the University offers a multicultural academic environment.

Graduates hold degrees with full validity in the EU recognised in every European healthcare system. Whether a student wants to practise in Romania, Germany, France, the United Kingdom or anywhere in the EU, a UMF degree opens the door.

  • All dormitories equipped with internet, refrigerators, shared kitchens, laundry facilities and access to the university student cafeteria
  • Guaranteed accommodation for all UMF students, whether state-funded or fee-paying
  • Additional available places may also be offered to students from other universities in Timișoara
  • Guaranteed access to the university student cafeteria, with subsidised daily meals for all students
  • Active social and academic support office for students
  • Peer support networks through the student associations of each faculty
  • A calendar of cultural and social events throughout the academic year

A multicultural campus

UMF’s trilingual teaching, in Romanian, English and French, creates a truly international student environment, with students from Romania, EU countries and international students from Africa, the Middle East, Asia and America. The campus community is one of the most culturally diverse in the Romanian university system, reflecting international demand for UMF medical training.

Partnerships with university clinical hospitals

UMFVBT is academically and clinically connected to several major university hospitals in Timișoara, where students complete clinical rotations from the first years of study. This integration of teaching with clinical practice is the defining feature of the UMF educational model: theory and medicine are never separated for long.

Innovation and digital transformation

21st-century medicine,
in practice

UMF Victor Babeș has made a serious commitment to what medical education means in the 21st century, not as a marketing claim, but as an active investment in infrastructure. The INO-DIGI-MED project, funded through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, with a budget of 17,6 million de lei, transforms the university’s learning environment both physically and digitally.

A comprehensive digital transformation programme that includes: modernising the entire IT infrastructure; purchasing interactive smart boards for all major teaching spaces; specialised software licences for medical simulation and training; expanding access to the digital library with real-time databases; and integrating VR and simulation platforms into clinical training workflows.

Full Code is an advanced medical simulation platform that allows students to practise clinical decision-making in realistic and interactive scenarios, in a controlled and safe environment. Students can repeat emergency situations, rare case presentations and procedural skills before their first real contact with a patient.

UMF has significantly expanded access to international medical databases and digital library resources, giving students real-time access to current research, clinical guidelines, pharmacological databases and specialist journals, from any device, at any time.

UMF has equipped dedicated VR laboratories through the VRPlus and MedSimVR projects, with full VR headsets, medical mannequins and immersive simulations of clinical cases. Students can experience complex surgical procedures, rare disease presentations and emergency scenarios in a way that textbooks and traditional models cannot replicate.

Why it matters for students

In medicine, the transition from theory to clinical practice is the most critical, and most stressful, moment in a student’s training. UMF’s investment in simulation technology, VR platforms and digital learning tools directly reduces that risk: students reach their first real contact with a patient after practising the same procedures dozens of times in realistic simulated environments.

Research centres

UMF operates several dedicated clinical and biomedical research centres, with active projects funded nationally and at European level. PhD students, master’s students and even motivated bachelor’s students can take part in active research through the VADA programme and under direct supervision from teaching staff.

Fees and financial support

Medical education in the EU at a fraction of the cost

UMFT offers both state-budget funded places (with zero tuition fee, based on admission results) and fee-paying places. The exact fee amounts must be confirmed directly with the UMFT secretariat, because they vary depending on the programme (Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy), study level and funding category.

Types of scholarships available

  • Merit and performance scholarships: For students with outstanding academic results within medical-profile faculties.

  • Social scholarships and occasional aid: For students from disadvantaged backgrounds or those going through unforeseen critical situations.

  • Erasmus+ grants: For study mobility and clinical practice in universities and hospitals across Europe (EUR 300 to 800 per month).

  • Special scholarships and sports performance scholarships: Rewarding involvement in representation activities or outstanding sports results.

  • Scholarships from the university’s own extra-budgetary income: Awarded by the university according to its internal regulations to support excellence.

State-budget funded places

A significant number of tuition-free places are available at bachelor’s level, allocated through an admission competition (multiple-choice exam). EU citizens are eligible under the same conditions as Romanian students.

Support through dedicated programmes

UMFT facilitates access to additional social scholarships, such as projects funded through UEFISCDI, and collaborates with healthcare units and medical sector partners to support the professional path of high-performing students.

Why study here?

A medical degree at UMFT offers European-level training, in English or French, with access to clinical hospitals from the first year, at a fraction of the cost of Western universities. The degree is fully recognised in the EU, representing exceptional value for international students.
