European Capital of Culture — the legacy continues

Discover the city

Courses, career and time for yourself

Timișoara has been shaped by millennia of history and a remarkable mix of cultures, Romanian, Hungarian, German, Serbian, Bulgarian and more. What this gives you as a student is a city that feels genuinely open. You do not have to fit in here. You only have to arrive.

Timișoara at a glance

The city centre is extremely compact: everything you need as a student is at most 20 minutes away on foot. You can enjoy the largest pedestrian area in Romania, a vibrant space without traffic or stress. The banks of the Bega Canal offer the ideal place to relax, with bike lanes, cafes and a lively promenade.

A former European Capital of Culture in 2023, the city has kept a permanent artistic scene and renovated cultural spaces. Your calendar will always be full: from festivals and concerts to street food events, Timișoara is a city that rarely has quiet months.

festival vibe

Main Stage: Timișoara. The city that does not go on holiday.

Timișoara is not confined to lecture hall walls. Here, your playlist comes to life in public squares, the Bega riverbank becomes a dance floor, and the campus turns into a laboratory of ideas and parties. We have gathered the events that define the city’s pulse, from huge festivals to white nights at the university. It is time to write your memories to the rhythm of the city.

A multicultural city

A city that welcomes you as you are

In Timișoara, multi-ethnic identity is a way of life. Wherever you come from, the culture of tolerance turns integration into a natural process, giving you a place in the community without asking you to change who you are.

Culture without barriers

From the Philharmonic to theatres in Romanian, German or Hungarian, the city’s cultural life is as diverse as its students. Major institutions in the historic centre offer easy access to an artistic universe that speaks everyone’s language.

Gastronomy & connection

Timișoara is a socialising hub, from Banat flavours to international cuisine and specialty coffee. The diversity of local places makes it easy for local and international students to connect naturally.

Freedom in green spaces

The city is a huge green campus, with emblematic parks and lively Bega riverbanks. Bike lanes and relaxation areas bring nature into your daily routine, without needing special weekend plans.

Work alongside your studies

The local student job market is very active. If you are an EU citizen, you can work without restrictions. Non-EU students can work part time (4 hours/day), which can help cover an important part of their expenses.

Before you arrive

Everything you need to prepare

Arrival checklist

Required documents
  • Make sure you have your physical file with your original study documents (baccalaureate diploma, transcript) for confirming your place.

  • Have your student card validated at the faculty secretariat immediately after arrival in order to benefit from discounts.

If you are eligible for a scholarship (merit-based or social), you will need to open a bank account at one of your university’s partner banks. Submit the account statement to the secretariat in the first weeks to make sure the money is transferred on time.

If you live in a dormitory or in rented accommodation, applying for temporary residence registration is essential if you want to vote locally or benefit from certain medical services.

The dormitory administration or the apartment owner will provide the documents you need for the Population Records Office.

Validate your STPT transport card to benefit from the discount of 90% or free travel, depending on your university’s specific regulations.

Download the local transport apps (24pay) or use the STPT offices on campus to manage your travel tickets.

Each university organises an orientation week at the beginning of the academic year, usually in early October. Activities include campus tours, presentations of student organisations, social events and administrative registration.

International horizons and multilingualism

Even though you are in Romania, Timișoara prepares you for a global career. All four universities offer international development opportunities from the first year.

  • Erasmus+ mobility: You can go for a semester or a year to one of hundreds of partner universities in Europe.
  • Foreign-language courses: Take advantage of master’s programmes or optional modules taught in English or French to practise your technical vocabulary.

Student community and volunteering

Volunteering is the engine of student life in Timișoara. Getting involved in organisations such as OSUT (UVT), Liga AC (UPT) or similar structures at UMF and USVT will radically change your experience.

  • Leadership: Learn to organise large-scale events, such as the festivals mentioned above, and develop your communication skills.

  • Networking: Build a network of friends and future peers through social groups and projects dedicated to new students.
